The Unit 9 Blueprint: A Day in the Life
Starting next week, this is the sequence I am implementing to protect my students’ cognition:
The Relational Start: We begin with a “Question of the Day” to build human connection before the work begins .
Laptops Closed: Once the activity starts, the laptops go in backpacks and cell phones go in sleeves. We are using physical textbooks and paper packets to remove the digital temptation .
The Signature ‘Toll’: I walk the room with my Analog Command Center (a clipboard and a purple marker). To get my signature on their video notes, students must ask me one interesting question from the previous night’s video .
The Micro-Tutoring: By checking notes in small “clumps,” I can diagnose misconceptions in real-time before they start the lab or the problem sets .
The Mastery Viva: As assignments are completed, students defend their thinking verbally to earn their second signature .
The Closing Preview: The final five minutes are spent as a mini-lesson to highlight the “hard subjects” in the next night’s video, lowering the cognitive load for their homework .
Why the Clipboard Matters
I’ve tried doing this electronically, but I’m going back to the clipboard. It allows me to keep my eyes on my students, not a screen. I know who is on time, who is struggling, and who has mastered the concept—all without clicking a single button .
